SURRENDER A PET

BEFORE SUBMITTING A SURRENDER REQUEST
Sometimes surrender is the right next step, but a shelter can be a stressful transition for a pet accustomed to the comfort and routine of a home. Exploring other options first can help give your pet the best possible path forward.

Shelters should be used as a last resort.

From behavior support and pet food assistance to other community resources and tools that help you safely rehome your pet, there may be an option that helps you navigate the challenge you’re facing while keeping your pet out of the shelter.

Before submitting a surrender request, we encourage
you to explore the resources below:
SURRENDER FEE
A surrender fee is a requested fee at the time of intake; this helps the MEHS cover the cost of intake.
INTAKE EXAM
Allow at least 30 minutes to meet with our intake team for a brief medical exam (including blood/fecal testing). If any concerns arise from this exam,
the appointment may be
canceled or postponed.

WHAT TO BRING
Bring any previous veterinary and vaccination records, if available.
PLEASE NOTE
Items such as favorite toys, food, and bedding are welcome but may not remain with your pet throughout their entire stay.
