Services We Provide
The Metro East Humane Society provides a number of services to the 5-county area of Madison, St. Clair, Jersey. Bond and Macoupin, supported by your generous donations.
Adoption
We rescue unclaimed stray animals on a daily basis from numerous animal control facilities throughout the area. As space allows, we also accept owner turn-ins for a small fee from people who are unable to care for their animals. Owner relinquishments require an appointment and must occur between noon and 3 M-F.
Animals accepted into the shelter are isolated for a period of time to evaluate their overall health and temperament. Known health issues, including heart worm disease, are resolved before placing the animals up for adoption. All animals are spayed/neutered before adoption, and receive de-worming medication and their initial set of vaccinations.
Our shelter is open every day to facilitate viewing of the available animals.
Our available animals may be viewed on-line at http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/IL03.html

Call the shelter staff if you have any questions.
Humane Investigation
MEHS has a licensed humane investigator that works with local law enforcement and community agencies to investigate and follow up on complaints of abuse and neglect. This service is a supplement to local animal control officers. ANYONE SEEKING ATTENTION FOR AN ANIMAL SHOULD FIRST CONTACT LOCAL ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS OR, IF WEEKENDS OR EVENINGS, LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. Calls made to MEHS are worked collaboratively with local authorities.
If you suspect abuse or neglect in your area, please call your local animal control officers or, if unable to receive assistance, our Humane Investigator at (618) 656-4405. All reports are kept confidential, but names and numbers must be provided for records of MEHS.
Humane Education
We have staff and volunteers able to provide programs on animal care and humane issues to schools, churches, and other community organizations.
If you would like to arrange a speaker for your group, please call the shelter at (618) 656-4405 or e-mail us at info@mehs.org.
Public Spay/Neuter Program
MEHS offers low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for the public during scheduled surgery dates. Base cost for the services is $75.00 for both cats and dogs. Additional fees may apply for immunizations, etc. We also provide low-cost spay and vaccination services for feral cats and other rural areas, including farm cats where the public may require spay/neuter surgeries for a litter and/or group of cats. Please call MEHS to learn more about this program and scheduling availability.
The Farm Spay and Neuter Program, funded by PetSmart Charities, includes the spaying or neutering of any farm cat or dog for a cost of only $25. Owners should be prepared to provide proof of farm income in the form of tax records.
