Services We Provide

The Metro East Humane Society provides a number of services to the 5-county area of Madison, St. Clair, Jersey. Bond and Macoupin, supported by your generous donations.

Adoption

We rescue unclaimed stray animals on a daily basis from numerous animal control facilities throughout the area.  As space allows, we also accept owner turn-ins for a small fee from people who are unable to care for their animals.

Animals accepted into the shelter are isolated for a period of time to evaluate their overall health and temperament. Known health issues, including heartworm disease, are resolved before placing the animals up for adoption.  All animals are spayed/neutered before adoption, and receive de-worming medication and their initial set of vaccinations.

Our shelter is open every day to facilitate viewing of the available animals, and we participate in offsite adoptions at PetsMart in O'Fallon, IL the first and third Saturday of the month.

Our available animals may be viewed on-line at http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/IL03.html

Humane Investigation

MEHS has the only licensed humane investigator in our service area.  Bob works with local law enforcement agencies to investigate and follow up on complaints of abuse and neglect.

In 2005, our most notable cases were Holly and her 8 puppies, of which 4 froze to death in a Cahokia back yard, and Lucky, whose owner tied a concrete block to his neck and threw him in a canal.

If you suspect abuse or neglect in your area, please call Bob at (618) 656-4405 or e-mail us at reportabuse@mehs.org to report it.

Humane Education

We have staff and volunteers able to provide programs on animal care and humane issues to schools, churches, and other community organizations.

If you would like to arrange a speaker for your group, please call the shelter at (618) 656-4405 or e-mail us at info@mehs.org.

Farm Cat Fix

Our Farm Cat Fix program addresses the problem of epidemic cat overpopulation in rural areas.  We offer the rural population of Madison Country free spaying and neutering for farm cats.  To qualify, you must have a Schedule F (reporting income from farming)l

We also provide low-cost spay and vaccination services for feral cats and other rural areas.

Humane Euthanasia

For area residents with very sick or elderly pets, we offer low-cost humane euthanasia to help end suffering.

Please consider supporting MEHS with an online donation.

It's easy, fast and will mean the world to the dogs and cats!
