About MEHS
Our Mission
The Metro East Humane Society (MEHS) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, the provision of appropriate care and medical attention to an disposition of animals committed to its care, the extension of humane education, and the encouragement of animal population control.
It is our policy to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served by the Society, to seek to return lost animals to their owners, to seek suitable homes for animals without owners, and to provide euthanasia when necessary.
MEHS is financially supported solely through the generosity of the public. We receive no financial support from taxes or from the government. Our financial survival depends on generous donations from humane members of the public like you. See How to Help for more information on ways you can support the mission of MEHS.
Our History
Since its incorporation, the MEHS has worked diligently to improve the lives of animals.
It started with the Madison County Coalition Against Pound Seizure, which formed in 1985 to lobby for an end to County Animal Control's practice of selling animals to laboratories for research.
After the coalition successfully put an end to that practice, the group's leaders formed what is now the Metro East Humane Society and incorporated in 1986. MEHS leased space in the county facility until September 1995, when we opened our own shelter at 8495 State Route 143, Edwardsville, IL.
We currently serve a 5-county area in southwestern Illinois, offering an adoption program for homeless animals and the only licensed animal abuse/neglect investigator in the area.
